  15. Disinfectant is fully compatible with System 7 and Mac OS 8, including

  17. virtual memory, 32 bit addressing, and file sharing.

  21. Disinfectant is also compatible with the Power Macintosh.

  25. Leave the Disinfectant INIT in the Extensions folder. Do not move the INIT

  33. If you try to repair an infected file, Disinfectant may tell you that the file

  35. is busy and recommend that you either restart using your ‚ÄúVirus Tools‚Äù

  37. or emergency startup disk and try again or ‚Äúrebuild the desktop.‚Äù

  39. Restarting using your ‚ÄúVirus Tools‚Äù or emergency startup disk was
  40.  
  41. discussed in the ‚ÄúQuick Start‚Äù section above. Rebuilding the desktop is

  47. You should also be aware that System 7 is completely immune to the
  48.  
  49. ‚ÄúDesktop file‚Äù viruses (WDEF and CDEF). These viruses never activate,
  50.  
  51. spread, or cause any damage under System 7. Both hard disks and floppy
  52.  
  53. disks are immune to these viruses under System 7. Since the Disinfectant
  54.  
  55. INIT detects and blocks viruses when they first try to attack your
  56.  
  57. system, and since the Desktop file viruses never attack under System 7,
  58.  
  59. the Disinfectant INIT will not detect them under System 7.

  63. System 7 hard drives, however, often contain an old System 6 format
  64.  
  65. Desktop file. If you restart using an infected System 6 startup floppy,
  66.  
  67. this file can and will become infected by WDEF or CDEF. The virus will
  68.  
  69. only be active, however, when you start up your Mac with System 6. The
  70.  
  71. proper way to protect against this problem is to install a copy of the
  72.  
  73. Disinfectant protection INIT in your System 6 System folder.

  77. You should also be aware of a problem with System 7‚Äôs file sharing
  78.  
  79. feature. If you share a folder and permit write access to it by granting
  80.  
  81. the ‚Äúmake changes‚Äù privilege with the ‚ÄúSharing‚Äù command, it is possible
  82.  
  83. for files in the shared folder to become infected by a virus over the
  84.  
  85. network, even if you have the Disinfectant INIT installed on your Mac. The
  86.  
  87. INIT will, however, prevent the virus from spreading to your non-shared
  88.  
  89. folders. It will also completely block any attempt by the virus to execute
  90.  
  91. its viral code on your Mac or cause any damage to your Mac.

  95. We have always had the problem of viruses spreading over a network to
  96.  
  97. files in writable folders on dedicated AppleShare file servers. With
  98.  
  99. System 7‚Äôs file sharing, this has now also become a problem on personal
  100.  
  101. Macs.

  105. Virus infection over the network is only one of many serious security
  106.  
  107. problems with writable shared folders. Writable shared folders are
  108.  
  109. inherently insecure, and no kind of anti-viral or other security software
  110.  
  111. can prevent damage to their contents. To minimize these problems, we
  112.  
  113. recommend that you limit write access to your shared folders to only
  114.  
  115. trusted individuals. Never grant write access to guests (‚Äúany user‚Äù). The
  116.  
  117. only way to eliminate the problems completely is to never grant the
  118.  
  119. ‚Äúmake changes‚Äù privilege to anyone except yourself.
